Report Your Numbers In Thousands

If you need to report your numbers in thousands (i.e. $23,000 as $23), here's how to do it without having to retype everything.
  1. Select the cells you want formatted
  2. From the Format menu select Cells.
  3. In the Category list select Custom.
  4. In the Type box enter 0, (That's a zero and a comma)
Note: To show your numbers as millions, just add another comma to the custom number format in step 4 (i.e. 0,,).

Remember that the displayed result is just formatted to display as thousands. The underlying value hasn't changed. If you use these cells in calculations, the underlying values are used. For example $52,600 formatted as above would appear as $53. So, if you create a formula in another cell that divides this cell by 2 the result will be $26,300 and not 26.5.
