EDITOR NOTES Top

Hi Fellow Excel Addict,

Welcome to another edition of "Spreadsheet Tips From An Excel Addict."

When I started my website and newsletter six months ago, my goal was to help share my knowledge and experience in Excel with as many people from around the world as I could. Isn't it amazing that you and I share something in common with people in almost every country in the world? Just this past week we had new subscribers join us from Spain, Jamaica, Chile, Turkey, Canada, Costa Rica, the Philippines, Denmark, Ecuador, Columbia, South Africa, Great Britain, India, Australia, and USA.

I want to welcome all new subscribers to my newsletter and hope that you will also share this newsletter with your 'Excel-using' friends and colleagues. It is with your help sharing this information that this newsletter can have the biggest impact.

Don't forget, if you've recently joined the newsletter, drop by my website TheExcelAddict.com to catch up on all the past tips.

Congratulations to Apollo Tigalo from the Philippines who is the latest winner in my T-shirt Contest.

This week I have three more tips that I hope you find useful.

Have a great week.

To Your Success!
Francis Hayes (The Excel Addict)

EXCEL "QUICK TIP" Top
Cycling Through Font Colors
Often when you are spicing up your worksheets it is sometimes tricky to find the best looking font color to match the fill (background) color. There's a tool available in Excel that will allow you to easily cycle through all the font colors. This is a tool I personally have on my toolbar and use it often.

To add the 'Cycle Font Color' tool to your toolbar right- click anywhere on your toolbars and choose Customize. Click on the Commands tab and select Format from the Categories list. Scroll down to find the 'Cycle Font Color' tool, drag it and drop it on your existing toolbar. Now try it out.

All you have to do each month is click here to recommend my newsletter and website to a friend. For each person that you refer, your name will go into the t-shirt draw. The more Excel friends you refer, the more chances you have of winning a t-shirt. But please, recommend it only to people you know and who are Microsoft Excel users.

If you use the 'Tell A Friend' link at www.TheExcelAddict.com you could win $10,000 and you will also qualify for my t-shirt draw.

"HOW TO EXCEL" MINI-TUTORIAL Top
Fast Editing Using Your Keyboard
As I've said many times, Excel power users always learn more than one method to accomplish their everyday tasks in Excel. Sometimes you are in 'keyboard mode' where a keyboard shortcut would be easier. Other times you are in 'mouse mode' where clicking with your mouse is the quickest and best option.

Editing the contents of a cell is a common task in Excel where most users unnecessarily switch from 'keyboard mode' to 'mouse mode' because they don't know the keyboard shortcut. When you want to edit the active cell, simply press F2.

Once you are in edit mode, you can use your arrow keys to move around the formula bar. Pressing the HOME key brings you to the beginning of the formula. Pressing the END key brings you to the end. Holding down the SHIFT key while pressing an arrow key selects text. Holding down the CTRL key while pressing the arrow keys moves the cursor one full word at a time. You can also use a combination of CTRL+SHIFT+arrow key.

These shortcuts also work with many other programs. Just try them and see what you've been missing.

There are tens of millions of other Microsoft Excel users all over the world. The vast majority of them have a very limited knowledge of Excel's capabilities. My goal is to share this information with everyone I possibly can and help them to benefit from Excel's amazing capabilities.

Please help me spread the word about my newsletter. If you know other Excel users, please tell them about "Spreadsheet Tips From An Excel Addict". I'm sure they'll appreciate it.

BONUS "NON-EXCEL" TIP Top
Navigating dialog boxes using your keyboard
You may think that it would be difficult to navigate dialog boxes without your mouse. In fact, it is very easy navigate dialog boxes by using your keyboard.

To move from one field to the next in a dialog box, simply press the TAB key. You will notice the active field or button is highlighted. Most dialog boxes have been designed with this in mind so that when you press TAB you will automatically jump to the next logical field. To move backwards to a previous field, hold down SHIFT as you press TAB.

This is a useful trick for surfing the Net and just about any other program in Windows.
