GREETINGS FROM CANADA Top

Hi Fellow Excel Addict,

Greetings from snowy Newfoundland. Just when I was looking forward to spring, we got blasted with another winter storm. Take a look at this webcam. It's about 5km from where I live.

Anyone want to trade places with me? Brazil? Spain? Guam? I'm just kidding. I love it here in Newfoundland - but it sure would be nice to feel the heat again.

All this stormy weather is keeping me inside a lot, so I have plenty of time to find great Excel tips to share with you.

This week I've got two Excel tips and for my 'Non-Excel' tip, I am going to tell you about a great little (Non-Excel) tool I use that makes life a little easier for me. I hope you'll like it too.

To Your Success!
Francis Hayes (The Excel Addict)

EXCEL "QUICK TIP" Top
Change Excel's Default Font

If you're not happy with the default font that Excel uses, change it. It's easy.
  1. First click on the Tools menu and select Options...
  2. Click on the General tab.
  3. From the 'Standard font' drop-down list, select a font.
  4. You can also select a different Size.
  5. Click OK.
This new setting will not take effect until Excel is restarted. After that, every new workbook and worksheet will use the new font and size.

EMPOWER AND IMPROVE Top
Over the past year I have discovered that in addition to increasing ones business knowledge and working on improving ones career it is equally important to work on improving ones self.

Jim Rohn says, "What you don't know WILL hurt you." I wish I had known this when I was younger. I can honestly say that, over the past two years, the wisdom of Jim Rohn has had a major positive affect on my life, both personally and in my business. If you are looking to improve yourself personally and/or professionally, Jim Rohn can help you just as he has helped millions of others around the world.

"HOW TO EXCEL" MINI-TUTORIAL Top
An Alternative To Cell Comments

Cell comments (covered in an earlier tip) are great for displaying messages on your worksheets as reminders for yourself and others. You just hover the mouse over the cell containing the comment for a moment and the comment will pop up. But if you move to that cell using the arrow keys, the comment won't display.

Here is an alternative that you can use to display a message when a cell is selected with either the mouse or the keyboard.

  1. Select the cell where you want to see the message.
  2. Click on the Data menu and select Validation.
  3. Select the Input Message tab.
  4. Put a check mark in the 'Show input message when cell is selected' field.
  5. Type a heading for your message in the Title field. This text will appear in bold at the top of your message.
  6. Enter your message in the 'Input message' field.
  7. Click OK
Now, anytime you move to that cell, the message will pop up. If you develop workbooks for other users this is great tool to use to help them know what to do.

Instant Online Dictionary/Thesaurus Lookup

I'd like to share with you a tool that I use that makes life a little easier for me and probably can do the same for you.

CleverKeys® is a great little tool that puts an online dictionary and thesaurus right at your fingertips. The best part about it is it's free and it's really simple to use. You don't even need to type the word.

Once you have this little program installed on your computer, anytime you need to find the definition or synonym of a word, you just position the cursor on word and press CTRL+L. You are immediately taken to www.dictionary.com and given the definition of that word. If you need the synonym of the word, simply select the Thesaurus option on the webpage and click the 'Look it up' button.

This works with just about any program (Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, etc...) on your computer. How many times have you come across a word on the Internet that you didn't know the meaning of and a dictionary wasn't nearby? Just press CTRL+L and you've got the definition in an instant.

You can find CleverKeys® at http://www.cleverkeys.com
