GREETINGS FROM CANADA Top

Hi Fellow Excel Addict,

Finally! My website problem has been corrected. Or, so it seems. There was a problem with my website last week and many people could not access it, even though others had no problem with it. Thanks for your patience.

Have you looked at the list of countries that this newsletter is going to each week? See the EXCEL ADDICTS AROUND THE WORLD section below. There are Excel users like you in just about every country around the world. And regardless where they are from, Excel users are much the same. They love Excel and they want to learn easier and more efficient ways to work with Excel. I'm happy to be helping.

You could probably guess where most of my subscribers come from - the USA. But do you know which country has the second most 'Excel Addicts'? Take a guess! You may be suprised. I'll tell you next week.

I had some positive feedback on last weeks tips. This week I have some more tips that I hope you'll enjoy.

Till next week, take care and keep Excelling!

To your success,
Francis J Hayes (The Excel Addict)

P.S. VERY IMPORTANT Please remember to include "TheExcelAddict" in the Subject line of any emails you send me. This will help them stand out in the flood of junk email I have been receiving lately.

Printing Cell Comments

If you use cell comments in your worksheets, sometime you may want to print these comments. Most people think it can't be done.

Excel does allow you to print these comments but it is not very obvious how to accomplish this. The option to print cell comments is buried in Excel's Page Setup options. Click File, Page Setup. Then, on the Sheet tab, select one of the Comments options and press OK. Now print your worksheet. Then go back to Page Setup and change the Comments option back to None.

"HOW TO EXCEL" MINI-TUTORIAL Top
The Fill Handle Secret

In past tips I've showed you how to copy formulas and fill dates by dragging the Fill Handle (the small black square on the bottom-right corner of a selected range of cells). When you do this, Excel guesses what you want to do based on what is contained in the selected cells. However, sometimes you don't get what you want.

Do you know there is another secret hidden in that Fill Handle that most Excel users are unaware of. Those who have uncovered this secret, have gained complete control of Excel's fill options. Now I will share it with you.

Instead of dragging the Fill Handle while holding down the left mouse button, try it by dragging with the right mouse button. When you release the mouse button, a menu will pop up giving you a list of fill options.

Need to add a range of dates 2 weeks apart on your sheet. Enter a starting date in the first cell, then right-drag the Fill Handle for how many dates you want. Click Series, type 14 in the 'Step value' box and click OK. How about a series of dates for the 15th of each month. Enter a starting date, right-drag the Fill Handle for how many dates you want. Click 'Fill months' and click OK.

Go ahead! Try it out. You'll find lots of everyday uses for this hidden treasure.

Opening That File With The Right Program

Do you ever find sometimes that when you double-click to open a file in Windows Explorer it opens in the wrong program?

If you're like me, you've got a lot of picture files (.jpg, .bmp, .gif) on your hard drive. You may find that when you double-click these files to open them, they open in your Internet browser instead of your graphics program.

There IS a solution! And it's pretty easy too.

Rather than double-click the file, first hold down your Shift key and right-click on the file. A menu will pop up with an 'Open with' option. Click on it. (If you are using Windows XP, you do not need to hold down the Shift key. Just right click the file and select Choose Program.)

A dialog box will pop up giving you the option of which program you want to open that particular file with. Select the program and make sure the 'Always use this program to open this type of file' option is checked and click OK.

From now on, Windows will now associate that program with all files of that type. You just need to do this step once. From now on you should be able to double-click the file and have it open in the correct program.

Sometimes you may want to open a particular file with a specific program just once. In that case, remove the check mark from the 'Always use this program to open this type of file' option in the dialog box.
