GREETINGS FROM CANADA Top

Hi Fellow Excel Addict,

I am still recovering from a scorching weekend on the soccer field. Our temperatures on Saturday and Sunday were over 30°C. I know that for some of my newsletter readers, 30°C isn't that hot, but here on the east coast of Canada we get just a few of those days each year.

It amazes me how the kids can play soccer in these conditions. My girls under-14 all-star team played three games (4 hours) on Saturday in that heat. I was just standing on the sidelines and I was baked.

We all had a good time at the tournament but finished in fourth place. We got burned with two goals on two penalty shots in our last game and lost 3 to 1. But it was a great experience for the girls leading up to our main tournament at the end of August.

Anyway, back to the tips. I've got a few more tips for you this week that I hope will help you excel to the next level.

Until next week ...

Keep on Excelling,
Francis J Hayes (The Excel Addict)

P.S. VERY IMPORTANT Please remember to include "TheExcelAddict" in the Subject line of any email you send me. This will help it stand out in the flood of junk email I have been receiving lately.

Prevent Unwanted AutoFilling

Chances are that this has happened to you. You are copying information, such as a date or a street address, in your worksheet by dragging the fill handle, only to have Excel's AutoFill function kick in and increment each date to the next day or each street address to the next street number.

The simplest way to prevent this from happening is to hold down the CTRL key while dragging the fill handle.

Editing A Range Within A Formula By Dragging

I often see Excel users completely redo a formula because a cell reference within the formula is incorrect. Sometimes this is the best option, especially if it is a simple formula such as a SUM formula for the range immediately above. But when you have a more complex formula that contains several different range references, try the following method to easily correct the error.

  1. With the cell containing the formula selected, identify the incorrect range in the Formula Bar.
  2. Now, down in the worksheet, select the correct range of cells which will replace your selection in the Formula Bar. If necessary, use the scroll bars to move the range you wish to select into view.
  3. Now, down in the worksheet, select the correct range of cells. If necessary, use the scroll bars to move the range you wish to select into view.
  4. When you are satisfied that you have the correct range in your formula, press Enter.
If you make a mistake selecting the range:
  • If you haven't already pressed Enter, press the Esc key to cancel the change.
  • If you have already pressed Enter, select Edit, Undo (CTRL+Z) to undo the change.

BONUS "NON-EXCEL" TIP Top
Printing Background Colors In Internet Explorer

You may or may not have noticed this before but whenever you print a web page, the background colors and background graphics don't print. The text and all other graphics prints but the background doesn't. This is good, because you don't want to be wasting all of your printer ink (or toner) unnecessarily.

Sometimes, however, you may want to print a web page exactly as it is viewed on the screen, background and all. To make this possible you just need to temporarily change one simple setting.

  1. From the Internet Explorer menu, select Tools, then choose Internet Options...
  2. Click on the Advanced tab
  3. Scroll down until you see a printer icon on the left side of the list.
  4. Place a check mark in the 'Print background colors and images' option.
  5. Click OK
Now you can print the web page. Don't forget to change the setting back when you're finished.
