GREETINGS FROM CANADA Top

Many of my readers have been asking for it and now I am considering producing my weekly tips newsletter in HTML format - similar to this online version of my newsletter.

Currently, I am exploring several services that will allow me to deliver a much better looking, easier-to-read newsletter each week. Now that virtually all email programs can receive emails in HTML-format, there are more reasons for me to go the HTML route than not.

I will keep you informed of when I will be making this change. It will probably be in the next few weeks. If you have any comments on this, please feel free to let me know.

Try out my tips below.

Have a great week and keep on Excelling.

To your success,
Francis J Hayes (The Excel Addict)

P.S. VERY IMPORTANT Please remember to include "TheExcelAddict" in the Subject line of any email you send me. This will help it stand out in the flood of junk email I have been receiving lately.

I need your help. Will you help me reach my goal?

As you know, I really love using Excel and sharing my tips with everyone who could use them. My goal is to have my weekly tips going out to 4,000 readers by the end of this year. And I would really appreciate it if you could help me reach my goal by sharing this newsletter with all of your 'Excel-loving' friends and colleagues. You will be helping me and also everyone you share my tips with. Thanks in advance for your support.

EXCEL "QUICK TIP" Top
Really? I Can Right-Click With My Keyboard?!

As you know, I am always preaching the benefits of knowing both a mouse method and a keyboard method for doing your most common tasks in Excel. So you may be asking, "How can I access the right-click menu when I am in 'keyboard mode'?"

The answer is right under your nose.

Look at your keyboard. See that rarely-used, no-one-knows-what-it's-for key next to the Ctrl key (on most PC keyboards)? It looks like a dropdown menu with an arrow pointer. That is the 'Application key'. Pressing this key will display the selected item's shortcut menu the same as you get when you right-click.

Once the shortcut menu is displayed, use the arrow keys to move through the options and the right arrow key to select sub-menus. Press the Enter key to execute the command.

"HOW TO EXCEL" MINI-TUTORIAL Top
Moving Within A Selected Range Of Cells

Often when you have a range of cells selected, you need move the active cell within the range without deselecting the range. Here are some keyboard shortcuts you can use to get the active cell to move in whichever direction you like.

  • Enter - moves the active cell one cell down
  • Shift+Enter - moves the active cell one cell up
  • Tab - moves the active cell one cell to the right
  • Shift+Tab - moves the active cell one cell to the left
  • CTRL + (period) - moves the active cell from corner to corner within the selected range
Now, at first glance, these shortcuts may not look all that interesting, but I always say, 'you need to practice the tip before you can appreciate if it is something that will help you.' Just take a minute to practice moving the active cell around a selected range using the above keyboard shortcuts. If you are entering data, you press the keyboard shortcut at the point you would normally press the Enter key.

You may not need to use this tip every day, but there will be times when this will come in handy.

BONUS "NON-EXCEL" TIP Top
Disable That Annoying Image Toolbar In IE6

In Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, whenever you move your mouse over an image, a small toolbar pops up asking if you want to save, open, mail, or print the image. I don't know about you, but for me, this became really annoying.

After a little investigating, I found a way to get rid of that toolbar. In IE6, select Tools, Internet Options, and click on the Advanced tab. Now, scroll down to the Multimedia section and remove the check mark from the "Enable Image toolbar" option.
