GREETINGS FROM CANADA Top

Thanks for joining me again. I've got some tips this week that I think you will enjoy. Isn't it amazing, there seems to be no end to the things you can do with Excel.

Happy Thanksgiving Day to my American subscribers on Thursday. In Canada, we celebrated Thanksgiving on October 11th. And I just learned that the first North American thanksgiving event occurred in Newfoundland (my home province) in 1578.

I want to thank you for being a subscriber to my newsletter.

To your success,
Francis J Hayes (The Excel Addict)

P.S. VERY IMPORTANT Please remember to include "TheExcelAddict" in the Subject line of any email you send me. This will help it stand out in the flood of junk email I have been receiving lately.

Will you help me reach my goal?

As you know, I really love using Excel and sharing my tips with everyone who can benefit from them. My goal is to have my weekly tips going out to 4,000 readers by the end of this year. And I would really appreciate it if you could help me reach my goal by sharing this newsletter with all of your 'Excel-loving' friends and colleagues. You will be helping me and also everyone you share my tips with.

Go ahead, email this newsletter right now to three people you know who use Excel.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Autoshape Perfection

Having trouble drawing a perfect circle or perfect square with AutoShapes?

Do you find it tricky to draw horizontal or vertical lines? Here are a few tricks that will help you create perfect AutoShapes.

  • Hold down the Shift key to easily make lines vertical, horizontal, or angled in increments. Rectangles become squares and Ovals become perfect circles.
  • Hold down the Ctrl key and the AutoShape is drawn from the inside out. Try it, you'll see what I mean.
  • Holding the Alt key will ensure that the AutoShape is aligned with cell borders when moving or resizing the it. This is a great tip.

BONUS "NON-EXCEL" TIP Top
Change How Files And Folders Are Displayed In Windows Explorer

You have probably noticed that, in Windows Explorer, the way files and folders are displayed on your computer may not be the same as you've seen on other computers.

Often when I work on other people's computers, the files and folders are displayed as large icons. I prefer to see them in Details view because it gives me detailed information about my files, including name, type, size, and date modified. From the View menu, select Details.

Here are some of Explorer's other view options.

Windows XP...

  • Thumbnails (this is great for viewing graphics in a folder)
  • Icons (Large icon with just the filename)
  • Tiles (Large icon with more detail info)
  • List (Small icon with just the filename)
  • Details (gives you the most info about the files and allows you to see more files on your screen)
Windows 98...
  • Large Icons
  • Small icons
  • List
  • Details
To ensure that all folders in Explorer use the same view as the current folder, from the Tools menu, select Folder Options..., click the View tab, and click the Apply To All Folders button (Windows XP) or the Like Current Folder button (Windows 98)
