THIS WEEK'S QUOTE:
"Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein." -- H. Jackson Brown

GREETINGS FROM CANADA

Hi fellow Excel Addict,

Francis J Hayes (The Excel Addict)
Well, summer is into full swing here in Newfoundland. The kids are out of school and for the first time in years I get to relax and watch my daughter play soccer (football) as a spectator rather than a coach. This is the first time in 8 years that I haven't coached a soccer team. I sometimes miss coaching but it sure frees up a lot of time for me to do other things. My garden hasn't looked better in years.

So have you been watching the World Cup? Because I live in Canada, I'm usually at work when the games are on live, but I usually catch the last 1/2 hour of the game when I get home. For the most part the games I've seen have been great. What a finish yesterday with Italy and Germany. I was hoping Germany would win because the home team in the final would have been something to watch. I'll miss most of today's game between France and Portugal but I definitely won't miss the FINAL on Sunday.

Anyway, enough about soccer. Let's get to the tips.

To your success,
Francis J Hayes (The Excel Addict)

EXCEL "QUICK TIP"
Display Your Numbers As Thousands

A while ago I showed you how you could round your numbers to the nearest thousand using the ROUND function. If, instead, you would like to have your numbers just displayed as thousands without changing the actual cell value, you can do that too with number formatting.

Select the cells you want to format as thousands. Click Format, Cells, select the Number tab, click Custom, type 0, (zero comma) in the Type field and click OK.

"HOW TO EXCEL" MINI-TUTORIAL
Sorting Sideways

Excel's default setting for sorting is by row. However, sometime you may want to sort by column instead. Here's how...

  1. Select the range of data you want to sort.
  2. From the menu select Data, Sort
  3. Click the Options button
  4. From the Sort Options dialog, select Sort Left To Right and click OK
  5. The first Sort by option uses the first row by default, however, you can sort by any row in the selection.
  6. Choose Ascending or Descending
  7. Click OK

It is always a good practice to save your work before you sort. You can Undo after the sort but if you mess things up, you can really cause yourself a lot of grief. Sometimes, making a backup copy of your workbook is a good idea because it may be days later before you realize you messed up.

Another important thing to remember about sorting is, if you have a range of cells selected, Excel will sort only the data in those selected cells. You can allow Excel to select the sort range by selecting only one cell anywhere in that range. Excel will expand the sort range to all cells in the current region (bounded by blank columns and rows or the edges of the worksheet). To be sure that you sort only the range you want, I suggest that you select the sort range yourself.

BONUS "NON-EXCEL" TIP

Keep Your Quick Launch Bar Uncluttered

In previous tips you've heard me recommend using the Quick Launch bar on your Task Bar as an easy and fast way to launch your most frequently used programs and files.

Unfortunately, as you install more and more software on your computer, some programs will automatically add a shortcut icons to your Quick Launch bar. If you find that you rarely use some of these shortcuts, the simple solution is to right-click and delete them off your Quick Launch bar.

Remember, these are just shortcuts. When you delete a shortcut, it doesn't affect the program itself. You will still have access to these programs through the Start, Programs menu.
